General information

What to expect: The 372-acre Our Lucaya Resort contains two hotels. The Westin caters largely to adults and couples, while its companion hotel, the more casual Sheraton, is designed for families. Guests of both hotels have full access to all resort facilities and activities. The resort's expansive beach and four large pools accommodate both guests eager for fun in the sun and those seeking a tranquil getaway.

Amenity highlights: The resort's 7.5-acre beach slopes gently into turquoise waters hiding coral outcroppings for snorkeling. The Westin hotel section has two large spa tubs and three pools, one an enormous serpentine shape featuring an infinity edge and swim-up bar, and one a 90 by 12-foot lap pool. The Sheraton hotel section next door features Sugar Mill Pool, with a 60-foot-high stone tower, spiral waterslide, and a "quiet" section for adults. The resort complex has 15 restaurants and cafés.

Insider tip: The Manor House, Westin's colonial-style main building, not only contains a two-story lobby with potted palm trees and comfortable seating, but offers a veranda with rattan rocking chairs. From there, guests look over banks of blue-blossom plumbago and down an expansive manicured lawn to the ocean. This little-used veranda provides a tranquil setting for morning coffee and evening cocktails.

Property amenities

The three-floor, 25,000-square-foot Senses Spa & Fitness Center offers a beauty salon, gym, and health spa. The fitness center has cardio and weight machines, free weights, spinning and other exercise classes. The health spa provides massage, body treatments, hydrotherapy, and facials. Signature treatments include Total Senses Massage (four-handed massage, light Vichy shower), Sense of Joy (all-natural Bahamian body polish, massage), and Pure Sense Facial (aromatherapy, oat bran/almond exfoliation, hydrating rose water, light massage).

The family-oriented Sheraton, adjacent to this resort, offers daily activities around the pool and on the beach, including dance lessons, pool games, crafts, and athletic competitions such as beach volleyball--all complimentary for Westin guests. For an additional fee, Camp Lucaya in the Sheraton section offers supervised activities for children aged 3-12 in a multicolored clubhouse, with half-day, full-day, and evening sessions. Facilities include a sand playground and a 35-foot-diameter wading pool. Childcare for infants and toddlers is also available for a fee.

Policies

The resort does not accept Spring Break groups. No quad occupancy is permitted during Spring Break season.

Proof of citizenship is required for entry to the Bahamas.
Hotel rates include mandatory tax and gratuity charges.
Listed room rates apply to a maximum number of guests for each room category. A charge is levied for each extra guest age 13 and older. There are no extra-guest charges for children aged 12 and younger.
Rollaway beds and cribs are complimentary and should be requested at time of booking.
Photo identification and credit card or cash deposit are required upon check-in for incidental charges.

Dining

Churchill's Chop House - Located in Manor House, the Westin's colonial-style main building. White-linen service in two-level, air-conditioned dining room with tall windows overlooking the ocean. Central skylighted cupola features bright paintings of Bahamian scenes. Wrought-iron chandeliers and jazz background music. Menu selections include crab-lobster cakes, roast lobster, prime rib, steaks, veal chops, fish, and Crêpes Suzette. Open for dinner only. Dress code: long pants and collared shirts for men.

Portabellos - Located in resort's convention center in Westin section. Air-conditioned dining room featuring warm woods and white linens. Outdoor seating available on a veranda with ceiling fans. Italian cuisine including pizza, pasta, braised lamb shank, and prosciutto-wrapped beef tenderloin. Dress code: long pants and collared shirts for men.

Willy Broadleaf's - Located near resort's center in Westin section. Large air-conditioned restaurant with sections decorated in African, Egyptian, traditional Bahamian, East Indian, and Mexican fabrics, furniture, artifacts. American breakfast buffet. International dinner buffet.

Iries - Located in shopping promenade between resort's Westin and Sheraton sections. Series of air-conditioned, hardwood-floor dining salons, each with decor honoring a particular Caribbean island. Outdoor seating available in a fountain courtyard. Bar/lounge with indoor/outdoor seating. Bahamian and Caribbean specialties such as jerk pork, seafood paella, chicken curry, lobster, and fish, as well as steak and baby back ribs. Nightly tasting menu. Bar menu of conch fritters, chicken wings, curry chicken, and jerk-pork wraps. Fresh-juice drinks and notable piña colada.

China Beach - Located on beachfront in resort's Westin section adjacent to Sheraton section. Spacious, air-conditioned dining room with black ductwork ceiling, rose-and-black decor, bamboo accents. Pan-Asian cuisine including sushi bar, tempura, steamed grouper, roast duck, Singapore noodles, and Sichuan prawns. Bar serves appetizers such as chicken satay and Thai spring rolls.

China Grill - Part of China Beach building. Lunch menu featuring grilled seafood, hot dogs, and burgers.

Prop Club - Located on beachfront between resort's Westin and Sheraton sections. Large, casual, air-conditioned restaurant/nightclub festooned with airplane and boat parts. Pool tables, sports on television. Open midday until late night, serving choices salads, sandwiches, burgers, pizza, ribs, fajitas, steak, and fish. Dance floor with nightly DJ music. Karaoke on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Hammerheads - Located next to main pool in Westin section. Beach/pool bar with swim-up section.

Havana Cay - Located in Manor House, Westin's colonial-style main building. Cigar bar with wood-paddle ceiling fans and ocean view.

Plantation Café - Located in lobby of Westin's Breakers Cay tower. Starbucks coffee drinks, pastries.

Lighthouse Pointe Bar - Located adjacent to Westin's Lighthouse Point lobby. Overstuffed seating inside, veranda seating outside. Evening cocktails.

Waves Beach Bar & Grill - Located on beach in Westin's Lighthouse Point section. Fast foods, tropical drinks. Open for lunch.

Sugar Mill Bar & Grill - Located next to Sheraton's Sugar Mill Pool. Multi-colored decor. Lunch menu of burgers, hot dogs, salads, sandwiches, tropical drinks.

Barracudas - Located in Sheraton hotel. Colorful, air-conditioned dining room featuring semi-circular booths and fanciful fish-motif wall paintings. American breakfasts and international dinners. Buffets and/or á la carte service depending on hotel occupancy.

On Higher Grounds - Located in Sheraton hotel lobby. Starbucks coffee drinks, pastries, desserts, salads, sandwiches.

Recreation

The 372-acre Our Lucaya resort has two golf courses. The Lucayan Course features elevated tees, winding fairways, and numerous bunkers. The Reef Course, designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr., and site of a PGA Senior Tour event, features links play. The Butch Harmon School of Golf, has indoor and outdoor training facilities, computerized swing-analysis video equipment, and classes ranging from 1 hour to 3 days. A tennis center offers four lighted courts of different surfaces (natural grass, artificial grass, hard court, and artificial clay).

Guests can rent snorkeling gear, windsurfers, kayaks, Hobie Cat sailboats, and Jet Skis. Instruction and equipment are also available for waterskiing, parasailing, knee-boarding, banana-boat rides, and snorkeling, scuba-diving, and kayaking excursions (fees apply). A 25-foot trampoline is anchored in shallow water off the beach.

The Westin is also happy to help arrange nature tours. Choices include a nature and cave tour of Lucayan National Park, a day of kayaking and snorkeling at tiny Peterson Cay, a bike ride to a dolphin habitat and the tropical Garden of the Groves, and a kayaking adventure through mangrove swamps, where exotic birds abound.

Rooms

The Westin offers 749 air-conditioned guestrooms in two yellow-and-white buildings--a 10-story Breakers Cay tower at the resort's center and a three-story Lighthouse Pointe wing near the resort's eastern edge, well away from the busy activities near the Sheraton hotel on the resort's western end. Decor features Bahamian colors such as blue, turquoise, and yellow set against white walls and ceilings.

Rooms feature Westin's signature Heavenly Beds and Heavenly Baths. Each all-white bed includes a foot-thick pillow-top mattress, three sheets, two down pillows, two hypo-allergenic pillows, a decorative neckroll pillow, and hypo-allergenic duvet. A Heavenly Bath includes a curved shower rod supplying an extra 8 inches of elbow room, white-on-white shower curtain, dual-head shower, citrus-scented designer toiletries, oversized Brazilian combed-cotton bath towels, and waffle-weave bathrobes. Available on request, a Heavenly Crib includes a pillow-top mattress, baby blankets, a fitted sheet, and a white Cloud Rug beneath the crib.
