Sunrise Beach Club and Villas
Stayed here in June 2000 and had a great time. I'm pretty sure my family and I stayed in the same villa as the other reviewer - love to trade my nyc apartment for it! Sunrise has a nice Spanish meets the Bahamas feel - beautiful flora on the grounds. We found the beach to be very quiet and private and only walking distance to the Sheraton and Atlantis resorts. Ate at the Jungle Bar on our first day, great drinks, mediocre food and extremely slow service (an hour for a burger!). Would suggest eating at the Sheraton or Atlantis instead.
This is an amazing place. Think Rivendell. It's a collection of Mediterranean-inspired buildings clinging to a cliff. Streams meander next to paths, which cross them on small arched bridges. Flowering trees are everywhere; flowers spill off vines along the balconies. Most of the rooms are suites; ours had a waterfall and stream inside. The master bath had a large jacuzzi with a stained-glassed window featuring a parrot in it, as well as a separate dressing room. The living and dining room overlooked our private patio and beyond it, the ocean. We loved swimming in the 2 pools; we couldn't entice our 2-year-old son under the waterfall into the cave, but he loved the bridges and the broad steps into the other pool. We also loved the beautiful courtyard overlooking the low cliff by the ocean. If you could step back into a small Italian hillside village years ago, this is an ideal version of what you'd find. There was a small "jungle hut" bar that we didn't visit. Another feature offered that we didn't use were a full-time cook. The staff was attentive but not intrusive. We did spend a day a short walk away at Atlantis, and went back one evening; but while it is beautiful with plenty to do, it could make for a stressful vacation given the noise and activity level there. At Sunrise, while guests have access to a variety of activities, the layout of the resort, its beauty, and tranquility allow guests to really relax. Time can stop here, if you let it. |
