General information

What to expect: Owned and managed by the son of an internationally renowned French nightclub operator, this hotel reflects a cosmopolitan ambience with eclectic, international art and decor. Although guests must walk a half-mile to the famous 3-mile beach of pinkish sand running along Harbour Island's eastern shore, the hotel offers sunset views from a west-facing hillside, terraced down to the Atlantic Ocean.

Amenity highlights: Terraced into the resort's hillside is a weathered-wood sundeck surrounding an infinity-edge pool. The pool has a shallow children's section. Just below the pool, another sundeck includes thatched shades. Both decks offer thickly cushioned teak lounge chairs and views of the ocean and Eleuthera Island a half-mile away.

Insider tip: A single swinging rope-chair hangs on the terrace of La Guinguette bar, at the ocean's edge. Perfect for sunset viewing, the rope-chair is first-come, first-served.

Property amenities

Festooned with paintings, photographs, and other art, the air-conditioned main building includes a game room with a pool table and a bar. Two large, raucous macaws inhabit a large cage just outside the lobby, saying "hello" and "goodbye"--if they wish to do so. Guests may connect to the Internet with the resort's office computer (fee). Below the oceanfront bar called La Guinguette is an air-conditioned fitness center right at the water's edge, with cardio machines and free weights.

Dining

Chez Dupont - Open-air, ocean-view pavilion made of white wood. Serving breakfast and dinner only. Decorated at dinnertime with artworks, candles, white linen tablecloths, and tiki torches. Option of Continental breakfast or breakfast buffet every morning. Dinner choices include smoked salmon, carrot soup, roast grouper, New York strip steak, house-made ice cream.

La Guinguette - Sunset-view, open-air, oceanfront bar under wood ceiling. Terrace seating at umbrella tables also available. Lunch only. Sandwiches, salads, housemade ice cream, tropical drinks, espresso. Serves cocktails until late evening.

The resort offers 25 guestrooms and suites in six buildings of either one or two stories clustered on a fairly steep tropical-garden hillside. All rooms have private terraces or balconies furnished with cushioned lounge chairs and umbrellas. Rooms and suites are individually furnished and decorated with a fusion of African, Middle-Eastern, and Italian style. Original artworks are featured from around the world. Rooms have ceiling fans as well as air conditioning. Amenities include televisions with U.S. cable channels, VCRs, and CD players (complimentary video movies and CDs are available).
