Port Lucaya Resort & Yacht Club
To start our Hotel room at the Port Lucaya Yacht and resort club was very nice. The hotel attendents payed the most attention to you, out of anybody on the island. Our room was a great price, but to find out that our room tax was more then what we thought was a great price for our room. $14.00 person a night. This is a goverment imposed tax I was told. I did forget a bathing suit there, only to be told it would cost me $30.00 to have it mailed to me.(crazy) The food was not bad, there are serveral very fine dinning resterants which are a much better deal then the lesser priced ones. We ate at a Mexican one, and had a 3 Taco dinner for $14.95, which was only what it said 3 tacos, with very LITTLE MEAT. If you wanted extra chips and salsa it was $4.95. There is always a 15% tip added. When you ask for something do not be surprised to get no response. They are very good at forgetting things. We also had a pitcher of Margeretta's fo r$48.00 that had no tequilla taste to it. They did put extra in for us at no cost. Be prepared everyone has there hands out for tips. Do not even consider taeking a taxi ride without a very high bill. We wanted to go to a place around 8-10 miles from where we were and were told the fair would be around $38.00 one way for 3 people. Make sure you stay somewhere in the middle of activities, or lookout. The price on any type of souvaniers was really crazy. You can buy them much cheaper in the states. If you have the chance to take the ship in, but your liquar on there it is the cheapest around. Bottom line is it is not as built up as the prices are. I think the goverment has alot of work to do if they want to build this into a tourist area. Watch the local men, all are very rude, and proverted. Women do not walk around alone, and the for the most they are very pushey. The goverment will not even let the local people do any gambling at the casinos, due to the poverty levals of them. They are strickley looking for tourist money. If you want to make any calls home, be sure to bring your own pre-paid calling cards. No-one ever seems to know how much time you get on any cards, but it ends up at $1.00 a min., and this includes dialing time, and is rounded up. The location was not as beautifull as expected either. Maybe if you can afford to get away for a day you can find nice spots, but even the beach was only around 5 feet, and vey full of seaweed and kelp. In the long run spend the little extra and go to a more built up island like Nasua. For those who plan on taking a day trip with the discovery line, beware. It is a 5 hour trip there and they say you have 4 hours there, but you have to be at the port 1-2 hours before departing time, and then 5 hours back. It is not worth all that. I hope anyone who goes there plans on leaveing a note on the island. I had a fun time due to the company I was with, but would not do it again.
This is no RESORT. Nothing about this hotel will remind you of resort accomadations. The check-in process is extremeley long and several staff members impolite. This hotel charges you a hotel tax of $14 a day per individual. A family of four would pay $56 a day not including regular room rates. Expect to tip every individual you make eye contact with. Don't use the phones in the room because they o 200 ver-charge for this too. Bottom line, spend the extra money across the street, on the beach, and enjoy resort living.
Port Lucaya is a practical, modest hotel. Not alot of amenities, but for the budget conscious who is going for the beach, weather and entertainment, you can't beat it. The staff was helpful, security a plus, rooms were tidy. Beach is right across the street and it was fantastic to be so close to the Port Lucaya Marketplace. We went everynight for the nightly entertainment, kid friendly too. The pool was very clean as were the grounds. Location was great and I didn't mind the beach being across the street at all especially for the price. Breakfast buffet was good, rooms look exactly like the picture. If I could have changed anything, I would have to say that I would have liked a newer bed. |
