Sprawling little Freeport on Grand Bahama is home to about half the island's 50,000 people. Although it has no beach, Freeport makes up for it with its cruise port, resorts, and shopping. Nearby Lucaya, with its pleasant beach, has developed as a complimentary resort community to Freeport.

General information

What to expect: The 90-acre Royal Oasis Resort contains two hotels, the Crowne Plaza, close to the casino, and the family-oriented Holiday Inn. The Crowne Plaza attracts more adult vacationers and couples than does its companion property. The Atlantic Ocean is 3.5 miles away, but three pools give the complex a beach resort atmosphere. Guests of both hotels have access to all resort facilities and activities.

Amenity highlights: Two 18-hole championship golf courses offer unique tropical challenges such as trade winds and thick vegetation. Shared by the resort's two hotels, an artificial sandy beach fronts a million-gallon freshwater pool with three-story water slides, a waterfall, volleyball net, and swim-up bar. Each hotel has its own pool as well--the Crowne Plaza's includes a rectangular lap-swimming section, a swim-up bar, and a secluded rock-grotto spa tub.

Insider tip: A complimentary van shuttles guests between the resort hotels and to nearby points of interest all day and evening. The regularly scheduled shuttle arrives at designated stops.

Property amenities

The 28,000-square-foot casino offers slot machines, Caribbean stud poker, blackjack, baccarat, roulette, and sports betting. The casino lounge features live music and dancing nightly. Located in the resort's convention center between the Crowne Plaza and the Holiday Inn, the Palm Pavilion offers a buffet dinner and/or Bahamian folk show (calypso singer, fire dance, limbo dancers) on Tuesday and Saturday nights. Also in the convention center, the Camelot Room offers occasional headline acts such as Percy Sledge or the Village People, and an island-music concert every Saturday night. A music, dance, and tiki torch lighting ceremony takes place several times weekly at the beach pool.

Situated adjacent to the beach pool between the two hotels is a health spa offering massage, body treatments, and nail care. Massage options include Swedish, hot stone, and couples. Body treatment choices include Austrian mud wrap, sugar scrub, and marine salt glow. Nearby, a complimentary fitness center provides cardio and weight machines as well as free weights.

Fat Cats Beach Club, located near the beach pool, offers supervised day and evening activities for children aged 3-11 in an air-conditioned clubhouse and at a sand playground (fee). Adult group activities center around the beach pool and include dance lessons, bingo, and beach volleyball. The Holiday Inn includes two video-game rooms.

Paradiso - Located in Crowne Plaza. Intimate, dark-wood, linen-service Northern Italian restaurant serving dinner choices such as osso buco, steak, seafood, pasta. Dress code: long pants and collared shirts for men.

Palm Grill - Located in Crowne Plaza. Air-conditioned dining room and open-air veranda seating. Buffet and á la carte breakfasts. Lunch menu with salads, sandwiches, light meals. Dinner menu featuring pasta, steak, seafood, prime rib, conch dishes. Meals from children's menu are complimentary for guests age 12 and younger.

Coconuts Bar - Located in Crowne Plaza lobby. Bar and lounge seating. Sports on television, pool table. Bar menu. Open midday until late night.

The Oasis Café - Located in casino. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner buffets on weekends. Meals from children's menu are complimentary for guests age 12 and younger.

Splash Beach Bar & Grill - Located at beach pool. Swim-up bar and takeout fast-food counter. Meals from children's menu are complimentary for guests age 12 and younger.

Mama's - Located near casino. Pizza, ice cream, and desserts served late morning until late night

Rib Room - Located in Holiday Inn. Air-conditioned wood pavilion with ceiling fans. Dinner menu featuring warm lobster salad, escargot, steaks, prime rib, fish. Dress code: long pants and collared shirts for men.

Calypso Café - Located in Holiday Inn. Casual, brightly decorated restaurant serving breakfast buffets and á la carte dinners from a Bahamian/American menu. Meals from children's menu are complimentary for guests age 12 and younger.

John B Bar & Restaurant - Located adjacent to Holiday Inn pool. Open-air, weathered-wood spot serving salads, sandwiches, burgers, pizza, tropical drinks. Karaoke twice weekly. Meals from children's menu are complimentary for guests age 12 and younger.

Odie's Kids Restaurant - Located in Holiday Inn. Garfield-themed spot with small, brightly colored picnic tables, booths, stuffed animals. Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Meals from children's menu are complimentary for guests age 12 and younger.

Recreation

Royal Oasis Resort includes two 18-hole championship golf courses, both redesigned by the Fazio Design Group, and two driving ranges. Challenges at the Ruby course include trade winds and steep-lipped traps. The Emerald offers wide fairways and greens well protected by bunkers. The resort has six lighted tennis courts shared by the Crowne Plaza and Holiday Inn. Pedal boats are available at the beach pool.
