General information

What to expect: Located on the former site of Fort Nassau, which was built in 1695 to guard against pirates, the British Colonial Hilton dates from 1898. Neither a fire in 1922, which destroyed the original wood building, nor a succession of owners altered the hotel's status as the island's social and business center, a role it still plays today. The marble-tiled lobby is studded with palm trees under a 1.5-story skylight ceiling. A jazz/R&B/dance club, lobby lounge with nightly Bahamian/Caribbean music, and private beach attract locals as well as business and leisure travelers.

Amenity highlights: Bordered on one side by a tropical garden, the hotel's large pool has an expansive sundeck with lounge chairs and umbrellas. A 75-yard-long private beach is furnished with additional lounge chairs and thatched sunshades. Use of kayaks, snorkeling gear, and pedal boats on the beach is complimentary. Both sundeck and beach offer views of cruise ships moored nearby, and of the western tip of Paradise Island, 300 yards offshore. Guests can snooze in hammocks on the lawn adjacent to the pool.

Insider tip: For guests who wish to conduct business poolside or on the beach, the hotel's Office Alfresco program rents a wheeled cabinet containing a laptop computer with wireless Internet access and remote printing capability, a telephone (calls charged to room), and office supplies in drawers.

Property amenities

The 3,200-square-foot Azure Spa has seven treatment rooms with leather and cherry-wood furnishings. The spa offers massage, body treatments, hydrotherapy, facials, waxing, and hair and nail care. Massage options include Swedish, shiatsu, and aromatherapy. Body and facial treatments include hydrotherapy, herbal masks, mud wraps, and hydrotherapy.

A business center offers computers with Internet access (fee), as well as services such as printing and faxing.

Blackbeard's Cove Lobby Bar - Casual bar/lounge with large-screen television. Lunch and dinner menu of soups, appetizers, fried seafood. Open every afternoon until late night.

Palm Court Lounge - Crystal chandelier, tall columns, dance floor. Afternoon tea service. Bahamian/Caribbean band Wednesday through Sunday nights. Open every day from afternoon until late night.

Blue Note Lounge - Second-floor jazz/R&B/dance club open nightly. Clubby ambience of dark woods, semi-private booths with leather love seats, comfortable seating, pale-blue walls, and sheer curtains. Dressier clientele. Open every day from afternoon until late night.

Recreation

On the hotel's private, 75-yard beach, guests may use kayaks, snorkeling gear, and adult- and child-sized pedal boats, all complimentary. The hotel also has a large pool suitable for lap swimming.

An air-conditioned fitness center contains cardio and weight machines as well as free weights. The concierge can assist with golf and tennis arrangement at nearby locations.
